who we are
AntarcticaNOW is an international group of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine (STEMM). Our disciplinary fields range from Antarctic research to conservation biology and public policy, but we are united by a single cause: protecting the spectacular biodiversity of Antarctica.
AntarcticaNOW was founded during the world’s largest ever all-woman expedition to Antarctica with global leadership initiative, Homeward Bound. We are part of a collaborative network, comprising over 437 individuals from 41 countries and 25 disciplines of STEMM, who are dedicated to using our combined expertise and leadership to create a more sustainable future for our planet. Co-founded by Antarctic scientists, Homeward Bound brought many of us to the Western Antarctic Peninsula for the first time.
Having experienced Antarctica’s beauty and fragility and learned of its centrality in global ecosystems, we are inspired to use our diverse network and skills to champion the importance of its protection in the face of climate change and unsustainable resource use. We call on each of you to become Antarctic ambassadors: the conservation of this wilderness is our collective responsibility.
We can safeguard the future of the Western Antarctic Peninsula through a globally recognised Marine Protected Area. The time to act is now.
